President's message:

Crab Carnival is fast approaching. Yes, it is hard to believe, but Crab
Carnival will be upon us very soon. The committee members are working hard to ensure another successful year. We are fortunate to have so many people who will commit themselves to projects and ideas which will carry on the mission of Crab Carnival. We have some upcoming news that you may find interesting.

The Crab Carnival Committee voted to reduce the cost for non-profit vendors who have booths at Crab Carnival. This is just another way that we are trying to give back to our community that provides such support.

The Crab Carnival now has a web site of its own. When visitors search on
the web for seafood festivals, crabs, or
West Point, they should be directed
to the new Crab Carnival web site (search may take two weeks to be active). This site was initially possible through the efforts of two students at
West Point High School and Sue Kurfees who provided the beautiful design. Please help us to again show our appreciation for the efforts and support we receive from dedicated people. We are still someone "in construction" but please check out the site: www.crabcarnival.com and give us your comments for improvements, corrections, and enhancements.

Jammin' on the Point has been another successful event sponsored by the EDA and the Chamber. The local civil organizations are able to offer food sales and a portion of the beer sales is also donated to the organization.
Attendance has been good and the adjoining playground provides a nice area for children to socialize and play. The new fencing is another enhancement to the area. Please be sure and tell all of your friends to bring their chairs, bug spray, and come relax and enjoy an evening of music and food.

Thanks for your continued support,
Sandra Willis

SCHORLARSHIP WINNERS

This year the West Point/Tri-Rivers Chamber of Commerce awarded four $750.00 Community Service Scholarships to seniors who are planning to pursue higher education.  These scholarships were based on service to their community and each student had to write a 250 word essay on “What Community Service has had the biggest impact on me?”  Seniors from King and Queen Central, King William, New Kent and West Point Public Schools were eligible to apply.  This year’s recipients are John Harvey Mercer, Jr. of King & Queen Central High School, Brooke LeAnne Reed of King William High School, Andrea Costello of New Kent High School and Mia Bradley of West Point High School.  We would like to thank all those who participated and wish them “Good Luck” as they continue their studies this fall.

A special fund-raising auction was held in March to fund the scholarships and $3,000 was raised during this economically difficult period as a result of the many dedicated businesses in the tri-rivers area.  Brinkley and Betty Estis donated their auctioneering services, along with Gene Jenkins assistance and the following businesses provided the donations to make the annual auction a success:  Anna’s Pizza, Antonio’s Pizza, BayLands Federal Credit Union, BB&T Bank,  Citizens & Farmers Bank,  Chief Carl Custalow,  Divin’ Off the Dock, Sam E. English, II, DDS,  Essex Bank,  Integrity Food Group,  International Training, Inc.,  Margeaux’s Florist,  Marie’s Place,   Medlin Ford,  P’s & Q’s,  Reflections Photography,  Rivah Bounce, LLC,  River City Realty,  Scissor Sounds,  St. John’s Episcopal Church, The Watering Can, Town of West Point,  Tuckers’ Recreation Park & Marine, West Point Chiropractic Clinic,  West Point Pharmacy, West Point/Tri-Rivers Chamber of Commerce, and  Wyatt-Ogg Furniture Co.

FROM THE CHAMBER

Members please HELP!  The West Point/Tri-Rivers Chamber of Commerce is concerned about the events where alcohol is served.  We are being told that we must not let individuals enter the gated area when alcohol is served if they have any type of containers, empty or not.  Therefore, we need the members to help us encourage people to throw away any containers at the gate, so that we are NOT seen as enforcement people.

Our understanding is that the Chamber could lose their alcohol license for all events if we are inspected and not following the rules.  Therefore, we need the help of our Chamber members to keep these events continuing.

PLEASE HELP US TO KEEP THESE FUN ACTIVITIES IN OUR TOWN!!!!
